A solid performance & more hardware to wrap up Bayley’s first Elite National Championships!
After being part of the Team Pursuit Gold medal squad on day one, it was time to focus on individual efforts over the next two days, in the 6 event Omnium…
Bayley was sitting a respectable 7th overall after the Scratch Race, 4K Individual Pursuit and Elimination Race on day two. Not feeling on top of his game, however, he was looking forward to the third day of racing and the last 3 events of the Omnium.
The final day’s events included the Kilo Time Trial, Flying Lap & Points Race. Bayley put down a personal best time and earned a Bronze Medal in the Kilo Time Trial, just behind Team RaceClean teammate, Aidan Caves, while the current Canadian record holder, Vincent DeHaitre, secured the National Title.
The Omnium conclusion was an incredibly exciting 160 lap Points Race, where the overall standings were determined by the final sprint!. Bayley earned sprint points and was amongst the select riders who lapped the field, moving his way up to 5th overall. Team RaceClean teammate Aidan Caves earned the National Title, with Derek Gee & Dylan Davies taking Silver & Bronze.
The finale of the 2016 Canadian Track Cycling Championships was the 100 lap Madison, which is one of Bayley’s favourite races. Very strong teams not only entertained the crowd, but pushed each other to their limits, throughout this high speed race. Bayley spectacularly saved himself from a near crash, but as a result, he and Madison partner, Steve McKee, missed out on a valuable sprint for points. Inspired by each other’s efforts, Bayley and Steve continued to race an incredible Madison, and ultimately finished off Nationals with another Gold medal and Canadian Title!
The pictures below give you an idea of how Madison partners “throw” each other into the race… just imagine this happening at race speeds of 45km/hour!!
